Why we no longer offer services on the Master Replicas FX lightsabers Why we no longer offer services on the Master Replicas FX lightsabers
As many of you may have read, we no longer offer services on the FX lightsabers made by Master Replicas.  In fact, we stopped offering services on the MR models on March 1st, 2014.  This has been a very popular question and has led to some extremely heated emails which has led us to address this issue here.

So it's not that we don't like the MR models.  In fact, many of them are our favorites.  However, MR stopped manufacturing before the end of 2007.  Why?  Because they dropped their license with Lucas at the end of 2007 (if you want information about why, check wikipedia).  That means that even the newest MR FX is well over seven years old (as of May 2015).  So why is this a problem?  Here's why:

  1. The electronics they used were good, maybe even state-of-the-art at the time, but even in the newer MR models they were far from great, and in the older models that took 6 AA batteries, they are now pretty bad.
  2. The polycarbonate used in their blades was OK at the time, but with too much exposure to the sun, or cold, or any other number of other negative conditions, have caused many of them to become brittle and in many cases yellow, leading to ugly, cracked or even broken blades.
  3. Much like the blades, the plastics that housed the electronics have become weakened and brittle.
So what does all of this mean?  It means that the saber are no longer reliable for conversion or repairs.  Between 2012 and 2014, our tech spent hundreds of hours having to modify or in some cases, completely rebuild the housings in many of the MR sabers that were sent in.  This caused major delays in his ability to turn products around and left some products in less-than-optimal condition after their conversions.  Then in January and February of 2014, we received a large number of conversions in, all for MR sabers.  Nearly every saber sent in had to have some sort of rebuild or reconstruction done to make them even work, and in a few cases, the sabers ended up being unsalvageable.  So at the end of February, 2014, the decision was made to stop all conversion on all MR FX lightsabers.

Some of you may be thinking that a few bad apples spoiled the bunch.  But in this case, it ended up being more like there were a few good apples among the moldy, rotten bunch.  Sure, in their day the MR models were great, and even today there are a few pieces out there that have outlasted most of the rest.  However, there are far too many MR sabers that have issues, many of which are not even visible because they're hidden away inside of the hilt.  But as our tech found out rather painfully, start opening those hilts up and the housings may begin crumbling, the wires may start falling out or cracking apart, and the electronics may be partially melted, covered in corrosion, or crumbling themselves.  So no, we do not accept repair requests on MR sabers.
